A compressed work week is any job schedule that permits the completion of the job shorter than the regular five-day work week comprised of eight-hour shifts on each of the work days. Normally, a compressed work week is given in the form "4-40," which is when the job schedule is made up of a four-day work week comprised on ten-hour shifts on each of the work days.

One advantage of a compressed work week is that the employee is able to not work for three days in a row. This gifts the employee more time to relax, which may result in improved performance at work. A disadvantage of compressed work weeks are increased fatigue and family issues at home. Since employees work for a longer time each day under a compressed job schedule, they become exhausted easily, which is where the increased fatigue comes from. Family issues at home may result from spending minimal time with loved ones due to having to work for longer periods of time each work day.
